Why do you compete?

I would have to say that the biggest reason I compete is because it is FUN! I do like to see how I have progressed against racers that have been racing for a long time. But I really appreciate the competitive friends I have made and that they help keep it fun.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?

Well, recently I had the "honor" of doing a roll-out before out main event. When it was my turn I rolled up the the first jump and attempted a simple endo and over I went! I think I got a better reception NOT pulling it off. I am sincerely glad that everybody got a good laugh!

Why do you like this sport?

Did I say FUN?!?! I have made a lot of friends this past year getting back into BMX.

Music?

I love all kinds of music. I am an audio engineer and have had the pleasure of working with some really cool bands. Music is better than no music!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I don't know about growing up... But I have been fortunate to live some of my dreams. Owning a bike shop, working in the music industry. Being able to still race BMX.

Going to California!

While riding the MTB I had a major highlight in my bicycling “career”. I won a contest my partner entered me into. 1 week with the Specialized MTB team! In California!

A Break.....(or 2)

I made some great friends through our little local bike shop. We did a lot of riding. We would go to Kettle Moraine almost weekly. I broke my neck (literally) in 1994 and was very fortunate that I didn’t have to wear a halo, or worse. I decided to race BMX about 6 weeks later! I raced nearly a year. I received two 1st place trophies over the weekend at the Midwest Nationals in Rockford.
Then my new partner and I decided to close the bike shop. I got laid off from work and decided to go in a new direction and went to school for audio engineering. This is the first time that the bikes had to sit for a while. About 10 years! After finishing school I got a gig with a local production company where I did a lot of engineering and eventually was promoted to General Manager. I did that for 5 years. Then I went back to school, but to teach! I continued to engineer shows working with bands like Godsmack, George Thorogood, Jonny Lang, Govt. Mule, Long Beach Short Bus, J.J. Cale, Jimmie Vaughn, Susan Tedeschi, Soullive, Cheap Trick, the list goes on. The biggest event I worked was the Madison Blues Fest which had 60,000 + in attendance each day of the weekend!

Back In The Saddle

In late 2005 I took my son to Walworth County BMX to “check it out”. After watching for a while I asked him what he thought. He said it looked pretty cool. I said: “If you will I will.” And he said: “Ok.”…………Sucker!
I slowed my schedule to spend more time with the family. We started on the first of the year and hit it pretty hard, racing most weekends. We have and continue to make some great friends through this sport. I have really seen mature and I credit a lot of the ways he has grown, to BMX.
We have been traveling to neighboring states to compete. We raced at the 2006 Midwest Nationals in Rockford, Ill. Lewis placed 2nd on both Saturday and Sunday. I placed 2nd on Saturday and 4th on Sunday. This year we plan on hitting a couple more nationals and would like to make it to the Grands.

About Me

Like a lot of the older BMX racers, I grew up just loving to ride my bike. For the most part I grew up in a small town of Lake Mills Wisconsin. My best friend and I used to go watch the Motocross races at Aztalan. That looked like a ton of fun! But there wasn't a chance in the world my step-father would allow me to do that, nor could I afford to do it on my own. Then about  1979 we found these BMX bikes. That I could do! 1980 First race (non-sanctioned) 2nd place. I wasn't allowed to get my drivers license until I was 18 and we rode our bikes everywhere! We had BIG fields we could make tracks in. We lived there!
Then around '82 we found about the ABA and a track in Janesville.  We started racing there as well as Sun Prairie and Walworth County (called TNT back then) in the winter. We had to rely on other kids parents to drive us since mine were not supportive of this sport. So our racing was limited. When I could drive in '83 we hit the tracks a lot more. My first National in Janesville I placed 4th in the 17 and over intermediate class.
I kept racing when I could until ’85 when I had to have knee surgery. I stuck to the ground and kept riding doing some freestyle stuff but just could not give up the bike. I bought into a bike shop in ’88 as well as working a full time job, having our daughter buying a house and becoming a volunteer fireman. Whew! Started road riding with my partners and then Mountian bikes hit the scene. We got to ride some awesome trail before the sport got too big and trails started to close. I raced the chequamegon before it got too big. Not BMX, but still fun on a bike!
